The Neighborhood Has Gone to Pot!

All is not well in the weed wonderland of the Netherlands famous for its marijuana selling coffee houses. Aware of the poor example they are setting for Dutch youth; local authorities have set out to reduce the crime, drug tourism, and a lucrative black market drug that has flourished under liberal drug laws. Almost 20% of the existing cannabis coffee shops, including famous The Bulldog pictured above, will be closed in Amsterdam because they have been deemed too close to nearby schools. This will accelerate an already existing trend of closings that has seen over half of the shops in the country shuttered in the last five years.

Something I found humorous in most of the stories of this news is the understandable bias many of those interviewed had toward their “foreigner” dope smoking guests.

Another Theory Up in Smoke

photo by Mihnea™I found this rehash of an older story about using marijuana as a substitute for alcohol in Cannazine, “the daily zine for the cannabis scene”. While I have always considered marijuana the lesser evil when compared with alcohol, still I see no great benefits to society from it's use nor any reason to push for legalization.

I think it is rather humorous all of the elaborate schemes and creative uses the pro-pot lobby promotes in the efforts toward legalization, but even a hemp sweater makes more sense than treating alcoholism by getting high. Been there, done that, and all I ended up was a chilled out drunk that was just a little bit more open to trying other drugs.
