Medically Assisted Recovery: No Meth Around

photo by pescatello at The Discovering AlcoholicI had lunch today with a very smart and successful person that asked about my volunteer work at the “meth clinic”. As an advocate for medically assisted recovery, I was facing double trouble; he was obviously confused and really didn’t know much about it, but that hadn’t stopped him from having a low opinion of such establishments.

It's a common misconception for the general public to confuse methadone with methamphetamines, but when people abbreviate the words down to "meth" even I get confused. I give credit where it’s due though, once this individual was made aware of the differences between the two and the benefits of medically assisted recovery he did express his support.

What’s worse than a 6th grader turning tricks?

While still abhorrent, I don’t think even strawberry flavored meth designed to get kids hooked early can top the story of a 12 year-old hooker. Thank goodness that at least in this case that neither is true. The little girl in the picture above is obviously going trick or treating albeit in a very ill advised lady of the night costume and this story on “strawberry meth” also turns out to be less than factual.

But this isn't the only candy parents should be weary of. People call it "strawberry meth." It's crystallized meth that looks just like the candy Pop Rocks. It's slowly making its way around the country, and the target is young kids. ~ NTV

Snopes has the lowdown on candy masquerading meth, and that it is most likely not being marketed to kids like a sweet treat. This same story floated around last year, I too took the bait but the cheese heroin is for real (I've spoke with those who've used it). There are not as many details for the mini-harlot though; the caption stated that this inappropriate costume debuted on an early 80’s Halloween. That picture is just begging for a better explanation!

That's Crazy Talk!

This would be a lot funnier if the topics of discussion on "Good Morning Meth" weren't so eerily similar to those I have seen addicts and alcoholics act out in real life. I have personally heard three of these excuses myself on why people thought it would be a bad idea to quit drinking and drugging. These include weight gain, anxiety, and work related stress (in his case however I think most of the stress was due to a random drug testing policy). Even though in reality it's definitely not funny, I have also seen people come into the methadone clinic first- on the way to taking someone to the emergency room.

Good Luck Sir

I had a very good friend call me up seeking advice about his son (adult) who they have recently found out is addicted to crystal meth. My friend is extremely smart and experienced, he knows how hard things are about to get. His son says he has his drug use ‘under control”, which reminded me a little bit of this video produced by the Partenership for a Drug Free America.

How I wish I could have offered a solution or a cure, in reality there is little that I can do but offer advice on how to limit the damage and offer my prayers. Good luck sir.
