Ike Turner

2 ½ Corpses Market Blow Energy Drink

Blow Energy Drink is packaged in powder form meant to be mixed with other beverages and is distastefully marketed as its name suggests.

But it's the marketing which is revving people up. The kit comes with a mirror and a credit card to cut the stuff, all packaged in a Styrofoam container made to look like a brick of cocaine. ~ WTVM

It’s been in the news for several weeks, in fact Logan Gola, founder of iloveblow.com, has actually milked every bit of press coverage proving the adage that there’s no such thing as bad publicity. Happily taking shots from the talking heads of almost every major news outlet, Mr. Gola has taken advantage of the free airtime knowing that outrage sells… especially to the idiots who think this type of product is trendy and cool.

"We're after the ultra-hip party crowd," says Logan Gola, founder of iloveblow.com, which markets the product. "They get that it's tongue-in-cheek. We are children of the '80s who watched Miami Vice and Scarface." ~ Globeandmail.com

Not wanting to add my share of free advertising, I had avoided reporting on this story until my old friend Amy Winehouse came to the rescue.

Ike Turner Hit the Bottle and Wife, but Missed the Boat

Music pioneer Ike Turner died today at his home in San Marcos, California. While many have to pass away before their influence on a genre is recognized, Ike was already considered part of history and one of the original architects of rock. Famous for his talent, he became even more infamous because of his substance and partner abuse. So unfortunately, while Ike is often accredited as major player in the development of modern music it is his notoriety as a drunken wife batterer that he will be foremost remembered.

Tina walked out on him in 1975. Turner, already abusing cocaine and alcohol, spiraled further downward during the 1980s while she became a multimillion-selling star on her own. A recording studio he had built in Los Angeles burned down in 1982, and he was arrested repeatedly on drug charges. In 1989, he went to prison for a variety of cocaine possession offenses and was in jail when he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.~ International Herald Tribune

The drugs, alcohol, and the physical abuse were the reason Ike’s discovery and then wife, Tina Turner, walked away from him in the 70’s. When Tina left so did the spotlight and Ike Turner continued destroying the rest of his life and possessions in a drunken and drugged haze. Tina went on to become a rock icon… and did I mention very, very wealthy, while Ike cemented his place in history as the world’s most famous drunk, wife beater. Tina booked her passage on the Proud Mary, but Ike missed the boat.

This is just another example of how the drugs and alcohol which are often associated with, and glorified by, artists and entertainers are also instrumental in debilitating so many creative endeavors.

Rest in peace Mr. Turner.
