Antidepressants
- Let’s Just Say it’s Complicated-
I had a hard time getting my last story shaken out of the swiss cheese I call a brain. I couldn’t help thinking that I was being too much a fundamentalist when it came down my stance on taking antidepressants and how it affects one’s recovery efforts. So I decided to get some input from the doctors and counselors at the methadone clinic where I hold a recovery group. Best way to summarize our conclusions; well let’s just say it is complicated…
Now to lay some groundwork here, all of us believed that trying to wean someone who was new to their recovery off properly prescribed antidepressants was not a good idea. The question was should someone with a year or two of solid sobriety continue to take antidepressants if they have not tried to go without and/or they have unresolved recovery issues they continue to avoid.
