At first, I just assumed I had followed the wrong trail. I was link-jumping from site to site using the keyword “alcoholism” and ended up at a site where it seemed I would be more likely to learn something about child rearing than hard core drinking. I had ended up at Mom Writes, written by the lovely and talented long-time blogger Mary T. But upon closer observation you see the header illustration of her blogging domestic diva includes a glass of wine and a less noticeable impish tail. You know what they say; the devil is often in the details.

Mom Writes is one of those rare blogs that has a history, has a purpose, and obviously is written more for self satisfaction and fulfillment rather than advertising, linking, and self promotion. It’s a great blog. The white picket fence presentation threw me off with the first thing entering my mind being a perfect family, plenty money, and no problems. Look beyond the decorating tips, the funny kid stories, and the apparel however and there is a devil in the details named alcoholism. Addictions are close and personal like a knife fight, so sometimes I get so caught up in my own war it is easy to forget that alcohol and drug addictions affect millions regardless of state, stature, and station.
Here’s an excerpt from her post “Thoughts on becoming (perfectly) ordinary”:
But here's the truth: People can use that kind of information--stories about your sordid past, your illicit drug use, and your alcoholism--against you. People like employers, husbands trying to gain custody of your children, people who want to deliberately hurt you, people who are looking for your Achilles heel and are more than happy that you revealed it to the world in a public, timeless forum.
I've already said too much.
So here’s to the mom who writes, take care of yourself and I wish you the best in your recovery. Always remember that not only do people look for your Achilles heel, but so does your disease. Addictions are most dangerous when our attention is on other things it has convinced us are more important. One thing is for sure, you will fare much better against all foes including husbands and employers when you are safe, sane, and in stable recovery.
Good luck Mary.
