Tatum O’Neal: Tried to Relapse?

There’s an old saying that a relapse happens long before the first drink or drug use. For the alcoholic and addict, it is the planning and decision making behavior, the alcoholic thinking, which gets one in a position to buy that first drink or pill that is the actual start of a relapse.

Tatum O’Neal pled guilty today in court after being arrested last month for allegedly buying crack cocaine. Sounding more as if she was charged with jaywalking, she was ordered to attend two half day drug treatments and fined $95.

O’Neal recently confessed, “I was trying to relapse. I made a giant, horrible mistake that I regret and feel really ashamed and embarrassed about. I take full responsibility.” ~ The Celebrity Café

This is not Ms O’Neal’s first rodeo by any means, good grief, she has written a book on the subject. So for her to say “trying to relapse” and in the same breath say how she’s taking responsibility for her actions leads me to believe that she has fallen prey to alcoholic thinking.

Not missing a beat, she also was quick to blame the relapse on the death of her dog, and of course she is grateful that the cops caught her before she did any harm! Yeah, I’m cynical… maybe she really is telling the truth, but it’s the liar’s disease and I’ll bet a dollar to the dime that this wasn’t her first foray to the crack corral.

So here’s to me hopefully being wrong about her state of affairs and a hearty wish that Ms O’Neal finds a speedy path back to recovery. I am curious to what others think about her statements and if they would judge them as harshly as I have, so what about it my fellow recovering alcoholics and addicts?

As Addison Dewitt said to Eve Harrington:

"That was not only a lie, but an insult ....That was a stupid lie, easy to expose, not worthy of you..."

Doesn't she know how soon the dealers and hangers on are going to creep out of the woodwork and rat her out?

Dumb really.
