“Alcoholism - I understand drinking for social events, but I don't understand drinking to where you risk other's lives and your own. I don't understand how it can make you lie to your family and hurt your friends and scare people to death. I don't understand how a person can be on probation and subject to random tests and can then turn around and DRINK, knowing they might get tested and thrown in jail.”
So says cerddinen over at A little of this, a little of that while talking about her brother’s alcoholism and recent incarceration for DUI. I can sympathize with her and understand her frustration in trying to understanding alcoholism, especially when a family member is involved.
I felt the same way about my brother and I AM A RECOVERING ALCOHOLIC! My father, one of the smartest men I know, has gone through the trials and tribulations of having two alcoholic sons and still cannot grasp the power of an addiction. He just can’t imagine jeopardizing his family and life for the sake of one more drink, I guess it’s the sign of a healthy mind. Look at the 4 paintings on the left by Louis Wain, a turn of the century schizophrenic artist, these are often used as examples in psychology textbooks to describe Wain’s deteriorating perception of his surroundings. I guess in a technical sense I can understand what schizophrenia is, but just as I cannot imagine my sweet cats looking like the monster in the 4th panel I also pray that cerddinen never understands the unreasoning call of the alcoholic.

looking back at my post I know I should have left the gift of hope. Often jailtime and other catastophic events are the catalyst for change and recovery. Even forced sobriety is good and may give your brother some breathing room and a clearer head to realize he does have options.
The second picture reminds me of some of Van Goghs work. Can you picture that cat staring at you from the corner of The Starry Night: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Starry_Night. Which, by the way Van Gogh produced while staying in an insane asylum in Saint-Rémy. It has been speculated that his visions were the product of his love of absinthe.
me of one of those crocheted hoot owls of the 70's.
My husband has been sober since getting out of jail on his third DUI 171 days now - he has embraced AA - and I doubt he would be where he is today had he not stayed in jail the last time for 10 days.
