As you can tell from this cartoon from the SC Morning Post, there was sort of a mix-up last week at the Narita Airport in Japan. Seems a customs official that had gotten lax with the rules and placed about $10,000 worth of cannabis in an unsuspecting passenger’s bag to give the drug sniffing dogs a “real world” test. Unfortunately the dogs failed the test and the agent forgot what bag in which he had hidden the dope. Especially in Japan, you can bet your yen there was more than enough embarrassment to go around.
But that’s not really the big story.

I had seen this reported on last week and decided not to comment on it, airport authorities making a mistake even of this magnitude is not exactly unique content. No, the bigger story was that someone actually turned it back in!
Now all this turned out to be just a funny story with a good ending, but what if the passenger had gone on to be busted by other cops away from the airport with enough dope to be considered a trafficker? What if it had happened in a country like China where the death penalty could come into play? As if we all haven’t heard this story:”It’s not mine, I don’t know where it came from!”
I’m sure it was embarrassing enough that this happened, but what if someone was executed because a TSA guy was stupid and lazy? It will make you think twice about what strangers could do to destroy your life. Who would believe someone with a reputation like me, a self admitted alcoholic, that I hadn’t boarded the relapse train and turned into a gonzo dope fiend? Very few.
