I found this rehash of an older story about using marijuana as a substitute for alcohol in Cannazine, “the daily zine for the cannabis scene”. While I have always considered marijuana the lesser evil when compared with alcohol, still I see no great benefits to society from it's use nor any reason to push for legalization.
I think it is rather humorous all of the elaborate schemes and creative uses the pro-pot lobby promotes in the efforts toward legalization, but even a hemp sweater makes more sense than treating alcoholism by getting high. Been there, done that, and all I ended up was a chilled out drunk that was just a little bit more open to trying other drugs.

More and more people are finding themselves able to kick sometimes long-term, damaging and expensive alcohol habits without any of the uncomfortable symptoms of withdrawal which normally comes with long-term addictions, and they are doing it thanks to cannabis. ~ Cannazine
Hah, I wish it worked this way! I’d be the first in line saying we need vending machines full of pot at every AA meeting, of course then everyone would want to be an alcoholic just like 90% of California seems to suffer from glaucoma. Pot however doesn't cancel out the need for alcohol. Much like Valium and Xanax, alcoholics may use it to help curb the anxiety and stress of a low BAC, but the end game will always be the bottle and a groggy drunk that may just relax so much that he forgets to breathe.
Leave this one alone stoners, nothing good will come out of it.
In fact, I wish the majority of the legalization lobby would drop this whole medical marijuana and "1001 uses for hemp" farce and just say, "hey, we want to legalize pot because we like to get high." Yea, I'll still vote against it, but at least I could respe... well not really.
