Amy Winehouse: TDA Crash Test Dummy

Since the eighties the crash test dummies have taught thousands about seat belt safety with their spectacular head-on collisions followed by the catch phrase, "You Could Learn A Lot From A Dummy."

In a similar fashion Amy Winehouse has become one of my favorite crash test dummies for providing a graphic example of addiction and recovery issues with her usual hellbent acts of self-destruction. While I wish her the best of luck in what I hope will be an eventual recovery, I intend to take advantage of her high profile antics to raise awareness of the misconceptions and dangers of substance abuse.

Caught, once again on video, smoking dope; it doesn’t look like rehab took very well for Amy and she is probably barreling toward another spectacular crash.

Many of her supporters are bringing up the fact that this time its not crack cocaine Amy is smoking, but instead only marijuana. For an addict though, it really doesn't matter what the substance is as much as the behavior and lifestyle accompany it. The behavior includes the rationalization of how this is only a soft drug, of course it will be ok to take just one hit. It doesn't take long at all before the addictive mind has logically concluded that most drug use and alcohol is OK. The lifestyle, the people with whom she associates, and her priorities seem to have changed very little since her rehab stint- not a good omen. Same patterns, same habits... expect the same problems.

Not a big fan of alcohol or pot, but if I was able to banish one from society it would without a doubt be alcohol. But for an addict, both are equally dangerous- same goes for an alcoholic. They are often called gateway drugs because they can lead to other substance abuse, but in the case of those who already have an addiction they are nothing more than a kickstart to destruction.

I did the same- quit and started back using numerous times always with a different plan and rationalization of why, "this time it will be different". I wish Amy could understand this, because she too could learn a lot from a dummy.

She and Pete Doherty continue to fascinate me. I am afraid for them, and especially Amy. She's so talented, and seems so genuine and likable underneath the disease. I hope she figures it out, soon.

but artistic talent is scant defense against the disease of addiction. Anecdotally speaking, it seems that this creativeness actually makes the battle that much more difficult.

Why on video girl? Really.

Well like TDA said, this may be the beginning of her starting/stopping phase and hopefully she can move on into the actual end of her addiction soon. Hopefully.
